For most phone users, 5G mainly means faster downloads and smoother video calls compared to previous generations of mobile networks. That's real, but it undersells the two properties that matter more for other industries: dramatically lower latency, and the ability to connect a huge number of devices in a small area at once.
Low latency is what makes remote-controlled machinery, real-time factory sensors, and certain AI-assisted medical procedures feasible over a wireless connection instead of requiring a hardwired one. High device density is what lets a smart city pack thousands of connected sensors — traffic lights, parking meters, air quality monitors — into a single area without the network falling over.
Rollout has been uneven across regions and carriers, and full infrastructure buildout takes years, but the direction is clear: 5G, and eventually 6G, are less about a faster phone and more about the connective tissue for everything else getting smarter.
